Warm Climate Wines

Climate is the core of terroir. It is the main factor that influences the style of wine you enjoy day to day. While cool climate wines express their delicate nuances, warm climate wines offer a distinct allure of their own. Produced in regions with consistently warm temperatures, the sugar levels in the juice produce wines with slightly higher alcohol levels which translates to fuller bodied wines. The result is wines with more fruit forward flavors. The main warm climate regions to know are: Napa Valley, Barossa Valley (Australia), Central Valley (Chile), Spain, Southern France, Southern Italy, and Portugal.

Here are the top four things we should know about warm climate wines:

1. Opulent Flavor Profile: Warm climate regions, like parts of Spain, Australia, Argentina, and California's Napa Valley, provide the perfect conditions for grapes to ripen fully, resulting in wines with ripe fruit flavors. From luscious blackberries and plums in Shiraz from Barossa Valley to the ripe tropical notes of Chardonnay from Napa Valley, these wines are often characterized by their rich, full-bodied profiles.

2. Velvety Texture: The prolonged exposure to sunlight and warmth encourages grapes to develop thicker skins, which in turn contribute to the wines' velvety textures and smooth mouthfeel. Whether it's the supple tannins of a Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa or the silky finish of a Malbec from Mendoza, warm climate wines tend to boast a rich mouthfeel.

3. Versatility with Cuisine: Warm climate wines' bold flavors make them compelling partners for a wide range of cuisines. Whether you're enjoying a hearty barbecue, savoring spicy Mexican fare, or indulging in rich Italian pasta dishes, these wines can complement and enhance equally boldly flavored dishes.

4. Resilience to Climate Variability: While warm climate regions may face challenges such as heatwaves and droughts, their viticultural practices and grape varietal selections often prioritize resilience and adaptability. Many winemakers in these regions employ sustainable farming techniques and innovative irrigation methods to mitigate the effects of climate variability and ensure consistent wine quality.

Warm climate wines offer so much enjoyment, with their bold, flavorful expressions. With their vibrant flavor profiles, velvety texture, culinary versatility, and resilience to climate variability, these wines continue to captivate wine enthusiasts like us. So, whether you're unwinding after a long day or celebrating a special occasion, consider exploring the rich tapestry of warm climate wines and savoring the vibrant flavors they have to offer. Cheers to the pleasures of discovery and indulgence!
